Summertime Hype: the Anticlimax of the Year

It’s July– by now all of us have heard the excited chatter, read the inevitable news stories, and thought about the glory of summertime.

When I was in school, summer was the best. It wasn’t the best because of the extraordinary Texas heat, nor because of the pressure to be “bikini ready.” It was the best because summertime meant summer break. An entire season dedicated to not working, gong to school, or over-exerting your mind. Yes, in college, I had a job that required me to work over the summer break. But that job never had a big enough impact on my elongated vacation to bother me.

Now, I’m 23, have a full-time job, and no summer break. I’m so thankful that I have this job, but I wish the external hype of summer would quite down so that I could refrain from summertime nostalgia. I don’t mind the work. However, I’m at that age where, while I do have friends in the professional world, some of my friends are still in school. They’re still experiencing the hype of summer. To me, it’s become a giant anticlimactic season– it’s just a hotter walk from my car to the office building.
